Police and crime commissioners to be abolished

On 13th November 2025, the government announced that the role of Police and Crime Commissioners will be absolished. The transition to the new model will happen at the end of the next electoral cycle in 2028.

The roles will be absorbed by regional mayors wherever possible, and in areas not covered by a mayor (including Gloucestershire), this responsibility will be taken on by elected council leaders, under the proposals.

The move comes as part of a major series of reforms to policing to raise national standards.

Gloucestershire’s PCC, Chris Nelson, has said “I will continue to represent Gloucestershire until the end of my term, standing up for our communities and working with partners to keep our county safe.”

We at Gloucestershire VCSE Alliance wish to extend our sympathies to staff at the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, who have been keen supporters of us and the wider VCSE sector over many years.
