In the UK it is estimated that 2.3 million people aged 16 and over were victims of domestic violence in the year ending March 2024.
Designed for frontline staff and managers, this session provides a comprehensive overview of domestic abuse. It explores the complexities of abuse, its impact on victims, families and communities and will equip delegates with the knowledge needed to identify risk, respond effectively, and support those affected, build trust with communities, and ensure services are inclusive and accessible.
Session overview:
Explore the different types of domestic abuse and the cycle of abuse
Understand relevant legislation, including the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, and associated criminal offences
Examine the impact of domestic abuse on victims, with attention to intersectionality and protected characteristic groups
Consider the effects of domestic abuse on younger and older victims
Understand domestic abuse in the context of the whole family, including risks and impacts on children
Gain a brief overview of perpetrator behaviours
Explore the role of complex needs in domestic abuse and how to support victims with multiple, overlapping needs
Understand the impact of trauma on victim responses and how to adopt a trauma-informed approach
Recognise the link between domestic abuse, mental health, and suicide risk
Learn about referral pathways and the professional’s role in identifying and responding to domestic abuse
Tea and coffee will be provided.
This event is fully funded for VCSE groups & organisations in Gloucestershire.
