With local government reorganisation continuing to progress, the Government has indicated that it is “minded to” confirm a single unitary authority for Gloucestershire before Christmas. If approved, the transition is expected to follow this timeline:
May 2027: Elections to Cotswold District Council, Forest of Dean District Council, and Tewkesbury Borough Council will proceed as planned on existing boundaries.
May 2028: Elections will be held for the new unitary authority, establishing a shadow council to oversee the transition.
April 2029: The new Gloucestershire Council will formally come into existence, bringing local government services together under a single authority.
Further updates will be shared as more details become available.
